Our History
Ashtar Ausaf Ali began his law practice in Lahore, Pakistan, in 1985, and quickly earned a reputation as one of the country’s leading litigators across trial work and tax advisory services. After succeeding in a series of high-profile cases, the firm expanded to handle litigation in all areas of the law, opening multiple offices in Lahore.
From the start, the firm emphasized openness and honesty with clients, while maintaining the highest ethical standards. These core values would endure as the firm’s work progressed.
The firm continued to distinguish itself in the constitutional arena, successfully representing the deposed Prime Minister of Pakistan before the Supreme Court against the dissolution of parliament by the President in 1993. This resulted in a landmark decision restoring the National Assembly for the first time in the country’s history.
The scope of Ashtar Ali LLP’s work also continued to expand and develop across all appellate fora, with litigation as its focus; this included taxation, banking, company, service, and regulatory matters.
In 1998, Ashtar Ausaf Ali was appointed Advocate-General of Punjab province. After the imposition of military rule in 1999, he supported the movement for the restoration of the judiciary.
Over the years, the firm established itself as one of the country’s leading litigation practices, before adding all significant aspects of corporate and transactional law to its services, and becoming a principal source of legislative advice for the federal and provincial governments. Barrister Asad Rahim Khan joined the firm’s dispute resolution and arbitration desk in 2014.
Between 2012 and 2016, Ashtar Ausaf Ali was appointed Prosecutor-General and Advocate-General of Punjab, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Law, and Attorney-General for Pakistan.
Ashtar Ausaf Ali resigned as the country’s principal law officer after the announcement of general elections, and returned to private practice.
As of 2019, Ashtar Ali LLP is a full-service law firm that advises clients in all spheres of corporate and commercial law, while continuing to act for government entities and public sector bodies in contentious matters.
The firm’s senior counsel appear before the Supreme Court of Pakistan in leading constitutional cases, as well as spearhead international arbitrations.
